Holly Brickley

Hello! I’m a writer, mostly of fiction. My novel DEEP CUTS is out now in the US and UK/Commonwealth, and is either published or coming soon in 13 other languages. Deep Cuts is also being adapted into an A24 film starring Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler.

I was born and raised in Hope, British Columbia, a tiny town surrounded by mountains (fun fact: they filmed the first Rambo movie there). At 18 I moved to the States, studying English at UC Berkeley and then getting an MFA in Fiction at Columbia University. Instead of putting this education to any sort of literary use, I spent the next decade running around San Francisco and New York, working in trend research and branding, and basically making a career of going out. I now live with my husband and two daughters in a creaky old house in Portland, Oregon, where I prefer to stay in, and write.

FAQs

  • While supplies last, US residents can order signed copies from Books are Magic in NYC: Order here

UPDATE: Supplies no longer last. If you DM me on Instagram I can send you a signed bookplate?

  • I mean, it’s not like I’m one of the Wilson Phillips ladies or something. But I grew up with music in a way that is, I think, unique.

My dad Chuck Brickley, known these days as a haiku poet, wrote songs in the 80’s and 90’s. Three were nominated for Juno awards. It would be difficult to overstate my dad’s influence on the way I hear and interpret music. Here is one of my favorite Chuck Brickley songs, if you’re interested. And here is his breathtaking poetry.

My uncle Tim Brickley is also a talented songwriter and musician. As a teenager I loved hanging out in the back of his Indianapolis recording studio, Hit City. Here is my favorite Tim Brickley song.

  • I don’t know, but it’s not me!

(Truly, it’s not. I wish I could help out, and I really do think your bestie would make a perfect Zoe, but she will need to go through the proper channels. I’m sorry!)

  • I hope so! I update here semi-regularly, but the best way to get timely news is to follow me on Instagram @hollybrick.
